My neurology appointment was today. I had to miss work to have my boyfriend drive me up. We were nervous that the doctor would run some tests and tell us that I am further along in the progression than we thought. I was also nervous because this is the first doctor’s appointment about my Huntington’s that I had to go to by myself. My boyfriend drove me, but he had to stay in the waiting room with his son.
The doctor was very warm and friendly. He joked with me, and laughed. He has a similar sense of humor as I do. He even commented on how he liked the shoes I designed. He had me answer the regular questions, and do some silly feeling tests.
I had to walk normal, not fall over with my eyes closed, follow rapid fire random directions (like showing my teeth and wagging my tongue back and forth). It was silly, but I passed. He said there are no signs that my Huntington’s has started to present itself. He said I look healthy for now.
He asked me questions about my life, and my plans. He was getting a read on my mental state. I told him about why I got tested, why I got my tubes tied, and all about my family. He also asked about what I was doing to make myself feel better. So, I told him about my blog. I told him that I have been trying to reach out to other people in my same situation, or similar situations.
He said he thought I was doing really well mentally, and that I was amazing! It felt nice; made me smile.
I told my boyfriend about it in the car, and then reminded him that I am amazing when he started teasing me. His reply was, “I should go back and tell that doctor I know you are amazing, but he shouldn’t have told you.”
That is his way of saying that he is glad that I am doing well.
